February 24-26: Heartland Wine School

The Heartland Wine School will be Feb. 24-26 at the Oliver Winery in Bloomington, Ind., and is sponsored by the Heartland Grape and Wine Coalition, Indiana Wine Grape Council and Purdue Department of Food Science. Commercial winemakers will learn about bulk wine management, wine flaws, post-fermentation microbiology, the use of oak in wine, design of the wine package and show-and-tell wine tasting. In the show and tell, participants will share their wine with others and taste unusual varieties. The registration limit of 100 participants has been filled, but journalists interested in learning more about the commercial wine industry in Indiana may cover the event. February 25-26: Ohio River Valley Farm Marketing Conference

Purdue Extension will offer presentations, workshops and discussions focused on agricultural marketing. The conference will take place at the Holiday Inn Lakeview in Clarksville, Ind., located along Interstate 65 at 505 Marriott Drive. Topics to be covered include assessing and evaluating new market opportunities, business planning and financing, market development and marketing for value-added agriculture. Anyone from Indiana, Ohio or Kentucky is invited to attend. Registration is $15 before Feb. 14 and $20 after. Registration includes three meals and all activities and presentations. February 28: Botanicals Center For Age Related Diseases Symposium

The Department of Foods and Nutrition at Purdue will hold a symposium of the Botanicals Center for Age-Related Diseases and concurrent poster sessions of the botanicals center and Interdepartmental Nutrition Program. The symposium will be from 7:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. in Stewart Center, Room 214, and the poster sessions will be in Room 218. Participants can attend any session; however, a reservation is required to attend the lunch with speaker Jim Simon from Rutgers University. Simon's presentation is entitled "Tabloid Medicine: Miracle Drugs from the Supermarket." Lunch is sponsored by the Indiana Soybean Board. Other topics to be discussed include cardiovascular effects of flavenoids in grape products, cancer prevention and treatment, natural mechanisms of NaCl-sensitive hypertension, future Purdue research, and an accelerator mass spectrometry tour. March 4: Tri-State Conservation Tillage Expo

Purdue Cooperative Extension offices in the St. Joseph River Watershed, area conservation districts and a number of retail agricultural suppliers are holding the expo in the Cord Building at Kruse Auction Park in Auburn, Ind. Kruse Auction Park is located on Interstate 69. The event will run from 7:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. EST and will feature vertical tillage equipment, strip-till units, rotary harrows and no-till planter attachments, along with a number of crop input displays and commercial exhibitors. The guest speaker is Ken Ferrie, agronomic consultant for Crop Tech Consulting and consulting field agronomist for Farm Journal Magazine. He will discuss the impact of uniform soil density on root development, crop yields and profits. Tickets are $10 in advance or $12 at the door and include coffee, doughnuts, lunch and refreshments at the show. March 5: Southwest Indiana Crop Seminar

Soybeans, corn, wheat, forages and nutrient management are the main focuses of the Southwest Indiana Crop Seminar in Jasper, Ind. The seminar, which runs from 8:30 a.m. to 4:15 p.m. EST, will be at the Holiday Inn Convention Center, located just southwest of Jasper on U.S. 231. A few of the topics to be covered include planting, grain storage, weed control, recovering from drought, inputs, poultry manure use and nitrogen use. Purdue Extension experts and other specialists will speak at the event, which is sponsored by the Indiana Soybean Board, Purdue Cooperative Extension Service and the Indiana Department of Natural Resources. Admission is $5 at the door. Pesticide applicator recertification training is available for $10, and commercial applicators attending the seminar are eligible for continuing certification hours, while certified crop advisers can receive continuing education units. March 11, 13: Estate And Business Transfer Planning: Individuals, Spouses And Family Businesses

Purdue's Department of Agricultural Economics, Purdue Cooperative Extension in Rush County and the Rush County Community Foundation will hold meetings aimed at business owners. Participants can attend the sessions on March 11 and 13 from 7-9:30 p.m. EST at the Rush County Fairgrounds in the Root Building or on March 13 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Hearthstone Restaurant in Metamora, Ind. The Rush County Fairgrounds is located at 1299 N. Sexton in Rushville, Ind., and the Hearthstone Restaurant is located at 18149 U.S. 52. Gerald Harrison, Purdue agricultural economics professor, will be the lecturer. He has taught estate planning, federal income tax and agriculture law at Purdue and co-authored the book "Indiana Ag Law." Accountants, financial planners, lawyers and insurance agents who attend can earn continuing education credit. The two-part series will focus on planning goals and objectives, property ownership law, probate, taxes, valuation of farmland, new family-owned business interest deductions, estate planning, buy-sell agreements and charitable planning. The fee is $20 per individual, $10 for the individual's spouse and $60 for professionals seeking continuing education credit. There is a $15 additional fee for each continuing education certification beyond the first. Registration must be received by March 10.
