Purdue agronomy, animal sciences honor Allen County farm family

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – Purdue University's departments of Agronomy and Animal Sciences on March 7 will recognize the 2003 Indiana Farm Family of the Year.

Steve and Gail Schlatter, grain and hog farmers in Woodburn, Ind., will be honored. They, along with their three children and other family members, will make a presentation about their Allen County operation beginning at 2:30 p.m. in Purdue's Lilly Hall of Life Sciences conference room 2-425. A reception will follow at 3 p.m.

Purdue's Department of Agronomy has honored the Indiana Farm Family of the Year for the past two years. Since the Schlatter's raise 22,000 hogs and farm 2,600 acres of corn, soybeans and wheat, the Department of Animal Sciences is co-hosting the event this year.

"We are honored to have the Schlatter family join both departments for this event," said Craig Beyrouty, head of Purdue's Department of Agronomy. "Families, such as the Schlatter's, are a wonderful example of the team effort, work ethic and stewardship it takes for a farm to be successful."

Alan Grant, head of Purdue's Department of Animal Sciences, said, "It is important for outstanding farm families to be recognized and honored for their service to the agricultural industry and to their communities. This event is an opportunity for us to learn more about the Schlatter family's efforts and accomplishments and provides us with a better perspective on some of the challenges that farm families are facing today."

The Indiana Farm Family of the Year Award is presented annually at the Fort Wayne Farm Show by the Office of the Commissioner of Agriculture, Beck's Hybrids and Indiana Agri-News.
