February 19, 2003 Purdue workshop to help members with 4-H swine projectWEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – The departments of 4-H Youth Development and Animal Sciences will offer a workshop for beginning 4-H members to instruct them on how to select and show swine at their local fairs. Junior Pork Day will be March 8 on Purdue's West Lafayette campus. "There are many elements of the swine project new members need to be aware of," said Clint Rusk, livestock specialist in 4-H Youth Development. "One goal for this event is to provide an educational forum for both 4-H members and their parents. We want them to gain a better understanding of what will be expected as they raise their swine projects." Selecting a project pig, animal heath care, pork carcasses and showmanship are the focuses of this year's workshop. Around April, many 4-H members will purchase their pig. Once purchased, the member needs to provide adequate care, Rusk said. The proper housing, feeding and nutrition will be taught to participants at Junior Pork Day. Ryan Harrell, a Purdue alumnus, will help students develop their showmanship skills. Participants will be able to show a hog and be critiqued. Participants also will learn how to make wise meat purchases based on its redness and fat content. This workshop is geared to 4-H members, but is open to anyone interested. Parents also are invited. Registration is $5 and will be in the lobby of Lilly Hall from 7:30-9 a.m. The program will begin at 9 a.m. and end with an awards ceremony at 2:45 p.m. For more information, contact your local Purdue Extension office or Clint Rusk at (765) 494-8427 or rusk@purdue.edu.
