February 18, 2003 Black Cultural Center sponsors museum trip to St. Louis WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – Purdue University’s Black Cultural Center is sponsoring a tour of African—American cultural sites in St. Louis. A bus will depart from the BCC at 8:30 a.m. Friday (3/7) and return at approximately 11 p.m. Saturday (3/8). Travelers will visit the Black World History Museum, Katherine Dunham Museum and the Missouri History Museum. They also will participate in a guided tour of St. Louis, which will highlight various historical figures, including Scott Joplin, Dred Scott and other prominent social activists, writers, educators and politicians, who contributed to St. Louis African-American history. The Missouri History Museum exhibition, "Seeking St. Louis African American History," features three galleries that chronicle African-American history from 1764-2002. The Black World History Museum, the first of its kind in the Midwest, uses life-sized figures and other artistic expressions to tell stories of African-Americans who have a Missouri connection. The museum also features an authentic slave cabin, originally built on the Wright-Smith Plantation in Jonesburg, Mo. The cost of the tour is $50 for Purdue students and $100 for the public.
