Campus recognizes Celebrating EveryBODY week

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – Body image issues will be the focus of discussion during Celebrating EveryBODY Week from Feb. 23 through March 3 at Purdue University.

Activities scheduled during the week include three interactive workshops on body image by HumanRite Theatre. Performance dates and times include:

• 7 p.m. Monday, Feb. 24, with Phi Sigma Rho at Stewart Center, Room 314.

• 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 25, in the East Lounge of Earhart Hall.

• 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 27, in the Busby Study Room of Owen Hall.

Other activities include a Balance Your Life Wheel from 4-7 p.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 26, at the Recreational Sports Center. When participants spin the wheel, they will land on a category such as body image, healthy eating, exercise or stress. They will then draw a card with a question from that category and try to answer it. Prizes will be given for correct answers.

Friday, Feb. 28, will be Fearless Friday: A Day to Refrain from Obsessing About fat, Calories and Body Image. Volunteers will distribute pieces of candy along with a card that reads, "All foods can fit. Even candy can be included in a healthy diet occasionally."

Additional body image messages will be delivered through exhibits entitled, "Give Yourself the Gift of Self Acceptance." The exhibits will be assembled in 25 campus buildings, and 225 posters encouraging self-acceptance also will be displayed in residence halls, sororities and cooperative houses.

Sue Abney, adviser to Students for Healthy Body Acceptance and Positive Esteem (SHAPE), says she hopes students will take the time to appreciate their talents and intellect rather than obsessing about their body size.

"Eating and body image issues cause a lifetime of pain and suffering for many females, as well as males," Abney says "The goal of Celebrating EveryBODY Week is to encourage individuals to challenge the current unrealistic expectation of thinness by promoting positive self esteem."

Celebrating EveryBODY Week is sponsored by the Student Wellness Office.
