January 31, 2003 Seven Indiana youths named essay contest winners WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – Seven Indiana youths were honored by the Council for Agricultural Science and Technology (CAST) on Jan. 17 for essays written on the topic "Boundless Science for Bountiful Agriculture." Each winner received a medal and was invited to Purdue University to visit with researchers in the area of their essay topic. CAST essay winners recognized at the congressional district level were Julianne Heady of Manilla, Alyssa Rosselli of LaPorte, Chelsea Gibson of Huntington, Megan Carter of Rensselaer, Logan Springstun of Boonville, Justin Herb of Medora and Neil Ahrendt of Carmel. Ahrendt also was named the state winner and received a $100 savings bond. The national contest was for sixth- seventh- and eighth-grade students. Under the general theme of "Boundless Science for Bountiful Agriculture" were a variety of topics to choose from, including agriculture in urban areas, bioenergy, genetics and robotics in agriculture. CAST is a non-profit national organization dedicated to communicating science-based information pertaining to agriculture, natural resources, food, fiber and other societal and environmental issues.
