Purdue Theatre students bring original works to stage

WEST LAFAYETTE - Original works by a group of Purdue University theatre students highlight this year's Theatre Festival, which will take place at 8 p.m. on Thursday (1/30) through Saturday, Feb. 1, in the Stewart Center's Experimental Theatre.

Admission to the festival, co-sponsored by the Alpha Psi Omega student honorary society, is free. The audience will be seated on a first-come basis.

Student producers Matt Beran, a junior from Naperville, Ill., and Justin Karr, a junior from Columbus, Ind., decided to present a festival composed of original plays and scenes written by undergraduates in the Division of Theatre. Past festivals have focused on a single issue around which the production has been built.

"Our philosophy may seem to some to be a bit sketchy or incoherent," Beran says. "The pieces that make up the festival are a concoction of painted words formed into decorative sentences, which will hide our philosophy under a blanket of stories and analogies."

Plays included in the festival are:

  • "Baby" and "Ode to a Former Lover" by Jillian Shaw, a sophomore from Anderson, Ind.

  • "The Book" and "George and Mary" by Alex Floyd, a sophomore from Lafayette, Ind.

  • "Death of the Last True Romantic" and "Mother of God" by Andrew Rhoda, a junior from Lafayette, Ind.

  • "Lunch Hour" by Troy Jones, a sophomore from Lafayette, Ind.

  • "ADD," "Quest for Self" and "Writer's Block" by Alexander Hess, a junior from Granger, Ind.
