January 17, 2003 Spring, study abroad internship application dates near WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – Purdue University students who want to study overseas during spring break or this summer in the London Internship program have until Feb. 1 to submit applications for the programs and related scholarships. The study abroad application and scholarship deadlines for other summer, fall and academic-year applications have been moved to March 1. Traditionally, the deadline was Feb. 1. The London Internship program is study abroad's most popular course. Students take courses in London while participating in an internship for six-or eight-week sessions. This year, the two spring break trips include a theater program in London and a tour of Southern England. "The spring break and London internship are great opportunities for students to fit an overseas studying experience into their schedule," said Michael Starks, marketing and publications coordinator. "We continue to see a growth in the number of students applying for study abroad courses during spring break and the summer session." More than 500 students participated in 2001-02, and that number is expected to grow this year, Starks said. This fall 62 students spent the semester studying abroad. This semester 120 students will be studying overseas. In addition, 33 students are studying abroad during the 2002-03 academic year, and three students are gone for 2003. Study abroad programs are available to students in every major and include opportunities in more than 40 countries in Western and Eastern Europe, Australia, Africa, Asia, and Latin and South America. Program options include the entire academic year, a semester, spring break or summer session. There are three types of study abroad programs, including a direct exchange with universities overseas or a co-sponsorship that is arranged through an outside organization. Half of the students participate in Purdue faculty-led programs, which generally take place during the summer. Purdue Study Abroad also will begin offering short-term, multiple destination programs during the summer. Students can apply online or pick up an application at the Study Abroad Office in Young Hall, Room 105. For more information, students can attend weekly general information sessions, which are from 3:30-4:20 p.m. Wednesdays and Thursdays in the Study Abroad Office.
