Purdue Jazz Festival heats up January with steamy jazzWEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. ‹ The Purdue Jazz Festival offers a week of steamy jazz to dispel winter's chill starting Tuesday (1/14) at Duncan Hall with the Chicago-based Ryan Cohan Quartet. Sponsored by Purdue University Bands, the 13th annual festival offers the public and student participants the chance to rub shoulders with performers of national renown during three major concerts, as well as competitions, clinics and special events. This year the festival expands in new directions with the Ryan Cohan Quartet in residence at Purdue throughout the week. Quartet members will work with student musicians at various high schools in Tippecanoe and surrounding counties. The group's public concert begins at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday in Duncan Hall, 619 Ferry St., Lafayette. WBAA Radio will assist Purdue Bands in sponsoring this event, with treats offered by Snowbear Frozen Custard. Tickets are $8 in advance and are available at the Tippecanoe Arts Federation, Weast Music and Von's Records. Tickets are $10 at the door. Musical action continues at 8 p.m. Friday, Jan. 17, when Matt Wilson's Arts & Crafts Quartet performs in Loeb Playhouse. Live jazz also will be offered from 9:30-11:30 p.m. in the West Lafayette Village with Purdue musicians jamming at Vienna Espresso, 209 South St. With more than 90 big bands and combos from 60 schools in Indiana, Illinois, Michigan and Ohio competing on campus Saturday, Jan. 18, there will be more jazz per square foot at Purdue than in the jazz capital of New Orleans. Bands will vie for top honors in seven different performance venues located in the Purdue Memorial Union, Stewart Center and University Church. Admission to these venues, which also play host to a variety of jazz clinics throughout the day, is free. The day concludes with the 8:30 p.m. Festival Finale Concert in Loeb Playhouse. The concert will feature two New York City jazzmen ‹ trumpeter Michael Philip Mossman and saxophonist Bob Mintzer ‹ with the Purdue Jazz Band. Sunday, Jan. 19, offers its own unique musical
opportunities with a jazz church service and a gourmet jazz brunch. The church service,
which will feature the Riverboat Ramblers, begins at 11 a.m. in University
Church, 320 North St., West Lafayette. The brunch, which will be from 11 a.m.
to 1:30 p.m. at Maize Catering on Columbia Street, will showcase combos of
Purdue jazz musicians. The restaurant is located at 625 Columbia St., and the
brunch cost is $19.95 per person. To make reservations, which are preferred but
