January 8, 2003 Norman Borlaug to speak at Purdue Ag Fish FryWEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – Norman E. Borlaug, known as the father of the "Green Revolution" that was responsible for feeding millions of people in Third World countries, will be the guest speaker at the 2003 Purdue University Ag Fish Fry. The event will begin at 11:30 a.m. Feb. 8. For the second consecutive year the Fish Fry, the annual meeting of Purdue's Agricultural Alumni Association, will be held on a Saturday at Cumberland Place, just north of the West Lafayette, Ind., campus. "Having a speaker like Bob Dole last year really elevated the stature of the Fish Fry," said Donya Lester, executive secretary of the alumni association. "We feel that bringing someone like Dr. Borlaug will just continue the great tradition we have started. We are thrilled to get someone with his international reputation as our guest speaker." For most of the past five decades, Borlaug, a Texas A&M University agronomist, has lived in developing nations, teaching the techniques of high-yield agriculture. He received the Nobel Peace Prize in 1970. "The message he brings is one that rings true to our alumni: that technology and biotechnology are the answers to feeding the world's population," Lester said. Tickets for the event are $15, and the 1,500 available tickets will be sold on a first-come basis with priority given to those who attended last year. Prior to the Fish Fry, the annual Ag Forecast will begin at 9:30 a.m. with a discussion of rural economies by Mark Drabenstott, vice president and director of the Center for the Study of Rural America, Federal Reserve Bank of Kansas City.
