Two receive Hovde Award for environmentally safe agriculture

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – Two Purdue University professors who work together to promote environmentally safe agricultural practices were honored with the Frederick L. Hovde Award for Excellence in Educational Service.

The award was presented to Don D. Jones, professor of agricultural engineering, and Alan L. Sutton, professor of animal sciences, on Saturday (12/14) during the two-day Indiana Farm Bureau convention at the Indiana Convention Center in Indianapolis.

Jones and Sutton were honored for more than 30 years of service to Indiana and U.S. farmers.

The two served on the Indiana Department of Environmental Management's Confined Feeding Operation Task Force, which crafted the state's confined feeding rules that went into effect earlier this year. They provided the group scientific expertise on animal agriculture and nutrient systems.

"Our new confined feeding operation rules are sensible and sustainable because of their helpful assistance," said Mark Legan, president of the Indiana Pork Producers Association.

Among their other accomplishments, Jones and Sutton were recognized for providing workshops at more than 20 locations around the state to help livestock producers understand and comply with the new requirements.

The two have combined forces for several educational efforts over the years, including a national curriculum on waste management, and other materials, Extension publications and Web sites.

Hovde served as Purdue president from 1946 until his retirement in 1971. The award, sponsored by the Indiana Farm Bureau, honors Hovde's demand for excellence in research, teaching and service and has been given out annually since 1972.
