Ticket sales remain brisk for Sun Bowl packagesWEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – Ticket sales for Sun Bowl packages offered by the Purdue Alumni Association are keeping up with last year's pace, according to PAA executive director Larry Preo. Preo says package sales for the Boilers return trip to the Sun Bowl are faring much better compared to 1998, when the Boilers made a second consecutive appearance in the Alamo Bowl. Package sales dropped by approximately 40 percent that year. The Purdue football team will square off against Washington in the 2002 Sun Bowl on Tuesday, Dec. 31, at Sun Bowl Stadium in El Paso, Texas. The game is a rematch of the two team's appearance in the 87th Rose Bowl, which was played Jan. 1, 2001. The Huskies won 34-24. The PAA is again offering two package trips to El Paso from Sunday, Dec. 29, through Tuesday, Dec. 31. The "Boiler Special Tour" costs $1,080 per person for airfare from West Lafayette to El Paso and includes a two-night stay in a double room at the AmeriSuites Hotel, where a daily buffet breakfast will be provided. The "Black & Gold Tour" package includes airfare and a two-night stay at the Embassy Suites Hotel for $1,195 per person, based on double occupancy. It also features a daily breakfast. Both packages include a "Boiler Up" welcome reception, transportation to the Purdue vs. University of Washington game, a pregame tailgate brunch, a Sun Bowl souvenir and a Boilermaker pep rally, among other amenities. Game tickets must be purchased separately for $35. Preo says the Sun Bowl provides a unique opportunity to meet the students and staff who make each game a top-notch entertainment experience. "We are particularly pleased to include the special pep rally featuring the Purdue "All-American" Marching Band, athletic department officials and cheerleaders," Preo says. "We invite all Purdue University alumni and friends to share this wonderful experience." Preo says another tour highlight is the Rotary Sun Bowl Team Luncheon. "Starting players from each team are introduced individually," Preo says. "There also will be the induction of the 'Legends of the Bowl.' The 2001 legends were John Folmer and Barry Switzer. Nationally known CBS Sports personalities will serve as the masters of ceremony and add their unique individuality to the festivities." Tickets for the luncheon, which must be purchased in advance, are $30 per person. Complete information on the packages and the Sun Bowl is available on the Web. Packages must be purchased by Friday (12/13). To book a tour, fans also can call the Purdue Bowl Hotline at (765) 496-6300 or (888) 471-3027. Individual game tickets may be purchased for $35 by calling (765) 494-3194 or (800) 49-SPORT. Fans who cannot make the trip to El Paso also can purchase tickets and donate them back to the university as a tax-deductible contribution.
