December 4, 2002 Two Purdue residence halls to become co-edWEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – To meet the increased demand by males requesting on-campus housing and to satisfy requests for more co-ed living opportunities, Purdue University Residences will provide housing for men in portions of Earhart and Meredith halls beginning in fall 2003. While Meredith Hall once exclusively housed men, both residence halls have housed only women in recent years. Living space for men and women in Earhart Hall will be assigned by wing. Plans are being finalized for the configuration that will be used in Meredith Hall. Marvis Boscher, executive director of University Residences, says her office carefully tracks trends in student housing choices, along with university enrollment, and adjusts the mix of available housing in response to that information. "Current trends show that more and more students are requesting the opportunity to live in co-ed communities, along with the need to provide additional housing for male students," Boscher says. "This change will provide University Residences the ability to meet current and enrolling students' requests and better utilize available space." Another change involves Learning Communities, which are groups of first-year students enrolled in the same courses and who often live in the same residence hall. This Purdue program is administered through the Office of the Provost. Currently, Learning Communities are located throughout University Residences. Next fall, they will be concentrated in Earhart, Harrison and McCutcheon halls. "This consolidation will provide for expansion of the program, along with greater interaction among the participants," Boscher says. Purdue University Residences provides on-campus housing for undergraduate and graduate students, as well as visiting faculty and staff. For more information, visit the University Residences Web site.
