Purdue plans tree raising and holiday festivities

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – Purdue Student Union Board members and physical facilities staff visited more than 20 sites where home or business owners had offered to donate a large evergreen to serve as the 2002 Purdue holiday tree.

A 25-foot tree offered by Murdock Elementary School in Lafayette, Ind., was selected. It will be raised at approximately noon on Monday, Dec. 2, in the Great Hall of the Purdue Memorial Union and that afternoon will be decorated by PSUB students and Purdue Memorial Union staff. For the first time, student organizations are invited to make an ornament for the tree. Ornaments should be dropped off at the PSUB office in Room 268 of the union by Tuesday (11/26).

Once decorating is complete, spectators will have an opportunity to enter a contest in which they guess the number of lights on the tree. Greater Lafayette area performing groups also will provide entertainment near the tree on weekdays from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Holidays Around the World, in which cultural and religious groups will provide table displays to demonstrate how more than 15 different holidays are celebrated, will be from 3-6 p.m. on Tuesday, Dec. 3. Some presenters will be in costume, while others will offer games or ethnic food samples.

Dennis Yan, Holidays Around the World project leader, says the fourth annual event will be both fun and informative.

"The purpose of the event is to celebrate the diversity on campus through recognition of the different holidays that students celebrate," Yan says. "I hope it raises the awareness of our diversity on campus."

Greater Lafayette area children will be able to capture the holiday spirit on Saturday, Dec. 7, at Breakfast with Santa from 8-10 a.m. on the ground floor of the Purdue Memorial Union. The event, at which silver dollar pancakes, sausage links and milk or coffee will be served, costs $1.99 per person.

The tree will be remain standing through Sunday, Dec. 15.
