October 31, 2002 Convocations brings Atlantic Brass Quintet to campus WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – The Atlantic Brass Quintet will be presented at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 14, in Loeb Playhouse. Admission is $22 for general public, $15 for Purdue students and children K-12. Tickets can be purchased at Purdue box offices or charged by phone at (765) 494-3933 or (800) 914-SHOW. Tickets also are available at all Ticketmaster outlets. The quintet is presented by Purdue Convocations. The Atlantic Brass Quintet is widely acclaimed as one of the world's finest brass ensembles, and on any given night, can be heard playing a Renaissance dance by Praetorius, a Bach fugue or music by Duke Ellington and Frank Zappa. Its repertoire also includes classic works by Johannes Brahms and Manuel de Falla, ethnic music from Brazil and Costa Rica, and recent compositions written by Paul Hindemith and Gunther Schuller. Louis Hanzlik and Hirofumi Noguchi, trumpeters; Seth Orgel, French hornist; John Faieta, trombonist; and John Manning, tuba player; make up the group. Since its formation nearly 20 years ago, the Atlantic Brass Quintet has won six international chamber music competitions, among them the International Brass Competition of Narbonne, France. The quintet has performed across the United States and in more than a dozen countries. The ensemble can be heard on recordings from the MusicMasters, Summit, Solstice and Crystal labels. Highlights in the quintet's concert career include performances at Carnegie Hall, the Santa Fe Chamber Music Festival, the Boston Celebrity Series and the White House. Thousands have enjoyed their performances at Tanglewood, and in 1991 the group entertained an audience of more than 350,000 on the Esplanade as part of Boston's Fourth of July celebration.
