October 21, 2002 Terrorism Web site, environmental workshop garner awardsWEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – A Web site to help parents discuss terrorism with children and a confined-feeding operation workshop series were recognized Tuesday (10/15) at the annual Purdue University Cooperative Extension Service conference on Purdue's West Lafayette campus. The Purdue University Cooperative Extension Specialists Association gave the projects their Special Award and Team Award, respectively. The horrors of the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist acts left many children confused and wondering what had happened and how it affected them. Purdue child development and family studies Extension specialist Judy Myers-Walls, an expert on children's reactions to war and violence, worked with Purdue Agricultural Communications staff to create a Web site that was immediately available with information for parents, educators and others working with children. With the help of the news media, the Extension Disaster Education Network, and three national and international e-mail groups dealing with peace, children and families, the ag communications staff alerted the public that information on how to talk to children about terrorism was available worldwide. Within a day, the site had more than 17,000 hits. The site features broadcast-quality audio, video clips, photos, answers to frequently asked questions and fact sheets. Two of the fact sheets are in Spanish. The site is still active and continues to be one of the top Purdue Extension Web sites accessed. The Team Award recognized a multi-organization effort. New rules on how confined feeding operations (CFO) in Indiana store, handle and utilize manure took effect last spring. To help operators comply with the required documentation, Purdue Extension, Indiana Farm Bureau and the Indiana Department of Environmental Management teamed up to offer CFO environmental workshops in January, February and March. The 17 multicounty workshops focused on rule changes, required documentation, monthly inspections and developing an emergency spill plan.
