'Life After Incarceration' receives Ann Hancook Award

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – The Ann Hancook Award for 2002 honors a team effort to help integrate adult and juvenile offenders into the community after they have served their time.

The award was presented Tuesday (10/15) at the annual Purdue University Cooperative Extension Service conference on Purdue's West Lafayette campus.

The award recognized team members Aadron Rausch, Extension specialist, and Mike Talbott and Roger Moll, Extension educators, for working together to institute the program "Life After Incarceration" in Allen County.

The prerelease program targets adult and juvenile offenders to promote successful reintegration into the family and community. The effort also works to reduce repeat offenses and intergenerational incarceration.

Recognizing the many challenges faced by adult and juvenile offenders, the program teaches social, educational, vocational, interpersonal and parenting skills.

Following the 12-week program, 88 percent of the participants reported they had learned to reduce stress in their lives; 58 percent learned to effectively handle conflict; and 75 percent learned to use a decision making system.

The award is presented annually in honor of Ann Hancook, Purdue Extension program leader, who died in 1993. The award recognizes Extension educators and specialists who jointly create programs focusing on families.

Award sponsors are the Indiana Extension Educators Association; Purdue University Cooperative Extension Specialists Association; and the Alpha Lambda Chapter of Epsilon Sigma Phi, the Extension honorary society.
