October 15: Pork Interest Group — Gestation Crate Vs. Pen Issues

There will be a discussion of welfare and production concerns of swine in pens versus crates during gestation. The event begins at 7 p.m. Lilly Hall of Life Sciences, Room 3-113, on the Purdue University campus. Ed Pajor, Purdue professor of animal sciences, will talk about animal well-being issues, and Tom Gillispie, a veterinarian from Rensselaer, Ind., will talk about his experiences and how he has revised swine facilities. October 20: Education Center Of Tipton County Open House

The open house will be from 1—3 p.m. at the Education Center of Tipton County, 239 Ash St., Tipton, Ind. The education center is the newest Purdue University Extension affiliated community learning and technology center. There will be tours, demonstrations of the center's educational technology, and an explanation of classes and services offered to the community. Directions are available on the Web. October 24: Horse Nutrition And Pasture Management Workshop

Basic horse nutrition and pasture management will be covered during a free workshop from 6:30-9 p.m. at the First Harrison Bank, located on U.S. 150 in Greenville, Ind. Topics to be discussed include "Getting Serious about Renovation," "Managing that Exercise Lot so it is 'Grass Green' instead of 'Mud Brown,'" "Selecting Quality Hay for Your Horse" and "Interpreting Hay Test Results." Presenters will be Keith Johnson, Purdue Extension forage management specialist, and Susannah Hole, grazing specialist from the Natural Resources Conservation Service.
