For additional information, call (765) 494-8396 September 30: twilight meeting: nutrient management planningLivestock producers interested in how to manage pastures can come to the Purdue University Feldun Research Farm, located 3.5 miles west of Bedford, Ind., on U.S. 458. The meeting will begin at 6 p.m. and will cover the topics of pasture nutrient management, United States Department of Agriculture cost share programs and getting beef cattle through the winter after the summer drought. October 10: communities at the crossroads v: affordable housing and smart growth conferenceThe Communities at the Crossroads conference will showcase the application of smart growth techniques and the role of land in affordable housing programs in Elkhart, La Grange and surrounding counties. The conference will be at the Elkhart County Fairgrounds from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Directions are available on the web. The morning breakout sessions will feature speakers on "Affordable Housing from 'Your' Point of View," "Protection of Agricultural Culture and Land," "Regional/Urban Development and Tourism" and "Environmental Protection in an Agricultural Landscape." The featured luncheon speaker is William Hudnut from the Urban Land Institute in Washington, D.C., and former mayor of Indianapolis. After the luncheon, participants will tour sites to see smart growth techniques in action. Register online by Sept. 30. The cost of registration is $75. October 15-17: Purdue extension professional development conference"Leadership in Times of Change – From Planning to Action" is the theme of this year's conference. The conference includes committee meetings, breakout sessions, awards, luncheons and guest speakers. A wellness screening also is available for participants. The conference is open only to Extension professionals. Registration forms need to be returned by Oct. 4. October 24: Horse nutrition and pasture management WorkshopBasic nutrition and management will be covered at the First Harrison Bank in Greenville, Ind., on U.S. 150 from 6:30-9 p.m. Topics to be discussed include "Getting Serious About Renovation," "Managing that Exercise Lot so it is 'Grass Green' instead of 'Mud Brown,'" "Selecting Quality Hay for Your Horse" and "Interpreting Hay Test Results." Presenters will be Keith Johnson, Extension forage management specialist at Purdue, and Susannah Hole, grazing specialist from the Natural Resources Conservation Service.
