Purdue sponsors Women in Engineering Career Day Oct. 14

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – The annual Women in Engineering Career Day for high school students will be at Purdue University Monday, Oct. 14.

The event, sponsored by Purdue's Schools of Engineering and the Society of Women Engineers, is open to any young woman in her senior year of high school. There is no cost for the daylong program, which also is being supported by Alcoa, Boeing, General Motors and United Technologies. The registration deadline is Friday, Oct. 4.

Purdue alumna Heather Hoekstra May, a 1993 mechanical engineering graduate and manager of activity and premium vehicles and Jeep brand public relations at Daimler Chrysler Corp., will deliver the keynote speech.

The career day will give students an overview and specific information about the various areas of engineering. Students will be able to speak with practicing women engineers, women engineering students and Purdue faculty. There will be talks, demonstrations and tours offered by Purdue faculty and students.

Parents are invited to participate in the program with their daughters and may attend some of the sessions, including a special program on financial aid. There also will be a question-and-answer session with the director of the Women in Engineering Program and representatives from Freshmen Engineering.

An event for high school juniors will be in the spring.
