Indianapolis businessman William Bindley to receive leadership award

Caspar Weinberger headlines Krannert event in Indianapolis

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – Caspar Weinberger, former U.S. secretary of defense, will be the keynote speaker on Thursday (9/26) at Purdue University's Krannert School of Management Leadership Speakers Series in Indianapolis.

The event, which begins at 5:30 p.m. with a private sponsors' reception, is a dinner at The Westin, 50 S. Capitol Ave., for Krannert School alumni, friends and corporate partners. At 6:30 p.m., the evening officially kicks off with emcee Gerry Dick, host of Inside INdiana Business, who will welcome attendees. Several leadership awards will be presented.

Richard A. Cosier, Krannert School dean and Leeds Professor of Management, will speak prior to the 6:45 p.m. dinner. Purdue President Martin C. Jischke will make after-dinner remarks.

After dinner, William E. Bindley, a Krannert alumnus, CEO and chairman of Bindley Capital Partners LLC, will receive this year's Krannert Business Leadership Award. Presenting will be Jerry Semler, CEO of American United Life Insurance Co., last year's award winner.

Weinberger will make his presentation at 8 p.m.

Weinberger has been chairman of Forbes magazine since 1993. He served as secretary of defense in the Ronald Reagan administration from 1980-87. He has also served as secretary of health. education and welfare and chairman of the Federal Trade Commission.

Weinberger received his bachelor's and law degrees from Harvard College. He joined the U.S. Army as a private, moved to captain and became a member of Douglas MacArthur's staff in World War II.

He has been a practicing attorney, a member of the California State Legislature, and a director of Pepsico Inc., Quaker Oats Co. and Bechtel Group. He also was vice president and general counsel of the Bechtel Group.

Bindley, who was born in Terre Haute, Ind., lives with his wife, Mary Ann, in Naples, Fla., and maintains a residence in Carmel, Ind.

Bindley graduated from Purdue with a bachelor's degree in industrial economics in 1962. He received an honorary doctorate of management from Purdue in 1997 and completed the Wholesale Management Program at the Graduate School of Business at Stanford University in 1966.

He also is chairman of Priority Healthcare Corp., a national provider of biopharmaceuticals and complex therapies for the treatment of chronic diseases, which he founded in 1994. For the year 2000, it ranked 39th among all U.S. public companies in total return to stockholders.

In 1968, he founded Bindley Western Industries, a pharmaceutical distributor that became a Fortune 200 Company trading on the New York Stock Exchange and was the second largest company in Indiana. In February 2001, Bindley Western was merged into Cardinal Health to create the largest health care distributor in the world with annual revenues approaching $50 billion. Following the merger, Bindley retired as chairman and CEO of Bindley Western and became a member of the board of directors of Cardinal Health.

A competitive skier, Bindley is a trustee and past president of the U.S. Ski Team Foundation and a member of the executive committee of the National Governing Body for the U.S. Ski Team. He is the former owner of the Indiana Pacers basketball team and has been involved with a variety of boards, many as a director, including those for St. Vincent Hospital in Indianapolis, Citizen's Speedway Committee for the Indianapolis 500 Mile Race, Capital Improvement Board of Managers for the City of Indianapolis, Indianapolis Convention and Visitors Association and Indiana State Chamber of Commerce.

Bindley has served Purdue in many capacities, including as a member of the President's Advisory Council, School of Pharmacy's Industrial Council, the Krannert School of Management Dean's Advisory Council, the Krannert Campaign Cabinet and now on the national steering committee for Purdue's upcoming campaign. He also served on the search committee that brought Dean Cosier to Purdue.

In 1997 his $1.5 million gift helped fund Krannert's newest building, the $35 million Rawls Hall.

He received a Sagamore of the Wabash award in 1989 for his entrepreneurial leadership, the Master Entrepreneur Award for the State of Indiana in 1992 and the Krannert School of Management Distinguished Alumnus Award in 1996.

More than 400 people attended the first Krannert Leadership Speakers Event in October 2001 at the Ritz Charles in Carmel and heard basketball legend Bill Russell speak on motivation, analytical thinking and leadership.
