September 4, 2002 Sept. 11 Web site deals with children's reactions to the attacks WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – New information about how parents can help their children understand and cope with the anniversary of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks has been added to a Purdue Extension Web site that deals with terrorism and children. Judith Myers-Walls, the Purdue University Extension child development specialist who created the materials for the Web site, notes that young children who see images of the attack replayed on television may think that the attacks are happening now or are happening over and over. "The frequent replays of footage could cause children to experience the same fears, anxiety and stress that the actual attacks created, but the difference is that this time we can prepare to answer their questions and to respond to their emotions," Myers-Walls says. The address of the Terrorism and Children Web site is https://www.ces.purdue.edu/terrorism/children/. More than 43,500 people have visited the site more than 155,000 times since it was created on Sept. 11, 2001. New articles that have been added to the site are "Sept. 11, One Year Later: Age-Appropriate Responses for Parents and Others" and "Talking with Children about Terrorism – One Year Later."
