Gerontology program plans fall symposium

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – Purdue University's gerontology program is sponsoring its fall symposium "Life Course Inequality: Aging as the Link Between History and Biography" on Sept. 19.

The Purdue community, general public and those 65 and older are invited to hear how historical events and trends shape the life course and development of social inequality. The speakers will discuss how history and biography intersect to shape aging and human development.

Glen H. Elder Jr., the Howard W. Odum Distinguished Professor of Sociology from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, will start the symposium with "WWII in Men's Lives: Insights on Aging from the Life Course." Keith H. Whitfield, associate professor of biobehavioral and health from Pennsylvania State University, will follow with "Desegregation and Cognitive Aging Among African-Americans: Impact of Brown vs. Board of Education?" The third guest lecturer is Cheryl Elman, associate professor of sociology and fellow, from the University of Akron. Elman will present "Structures of Opportunity: Pioneer Women on Three American Frontiers."

Purdue's Kenneth Ferraro, professor of sociology and director of the gerontology program, will open the symposium with "Aging as the Link Between History and Biography." Gerald Hyner, professor of health and kinesiology and associate director of the gerontology program, will close the afternoon with "Opportunities and Challenges for Research on Life Course Inequality."

The registration deadline for the event is Aug. 30. The symposium will be at the University Inn Conference Center, and registration begins at 1 p.m. Hyner, the last speaker, is scheduled to begin his presentation at 4:30 p.m. The full registration fee is $40. There is no fee for Purdue faculty, staff or students, nor if the individual is 65 years or older. For more information, call (765) 494-0567.
