August 22, 2002 Mortar Board calendar sales support scholarshipsWEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – Purdue University President Martin C. Jischke continued a 57-year tradition when he received his copy of the Mortar Board calendar from members of the national honor society.
During the 57 years the university president has been presented with a calendar, Mortar Board has given $736,000 in fellowships and awards to Purdue students, staff and student organizations from funds raised through calendar sales. "Thanks to the sale of 29,000 calendars this year the Mortar Board will distribute fellowships and use proceeds for various community service projects," said Pablo Malavenda, associate dean of students and the organization's adviser. Proceeds from calendar sales will go toward a literacy program, women's athletics (including sponsoring a Purdue volleyball tournament Sept. 6-7) and the awarding of $2,500 fellowships to 10 Purdue students. Other awards include a $2,000 national fellowship in the name of former sponsor Barbara Cook, as well as various leadership and service awards, including the Schleman Gold Medallion. Purdue's chapter is named in honor of retired dean of students Barbara Cook, who advised the group from 1956 to 1986. The newly formatted calendar has been increased to 176 pages, 16 more pages than last year. The extra pages contain new features that include a calendar that extends beyond 12 months to span the entire school year. The calendar features official university dates, athletic events, callouts for student organizations, important phone numbers, a campus map, monthly holiday listings, frequently used Web sites, semester breaks, university events and energy information The calendar also features operating hours for labs, libraries, the recreational center, the student health center and pharmacy, the Purdue Memorial Union, CityBus and academic services. Added features include a tribute to Barbara Cook with a biography and photo, an advanced planning page for fall 2003, maps of Indiana and the world, extra phone number pages, two note pages, more detailed university regulations and calendar pages with sharper lines. The calendars, which went on sale Aug. 7, cost $5 and are available at these locations: Discount Den, Follets Book Store, University Book Store, University Spirit, Wal-Mart and Super Wal-Mart, and the service desk in Stewart Center. Mortar Board is a national honor society that recognizes college seniors for distinguished ability and achievement in scholarship, leadership and service. With 191 college chapters, the national Mortar Board organization promotes the "Reading is Leading" project to give members the chance to use leadership skills while performing community service by promoting knowledge. Mortar Board members are selected for their achievements in scholarship and service to the university community. The society was founded at Syracuse University in 1918 as the first national organization honoring senior college women. In the fall of 1926, the Purdue Chapter of Mortar Board was chartered and is now celebrating its 76th anniversary. The society admitted men after 1975.
