Krannert School offers executive education for manufacturers

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – Krannert School of Management's Executive Education Programs at Purdue University and two Purdue alumni are teaming up to offer a management workshop for executives in manufacturing.

The three-day Sales & Operations Planning and Master Scheduling Workshop will be offered on Purdue's West Lafayette campus Nov. 19-21. The workshop offers an integrated management approach to enable participants to improve control of all phases of their manufacturing businesses. The focus of the workshops is to help companies create a formal process to balance supply, demand and inventory over a six- to 12-month planning horizon.

"American manufacturers need every edge they can get in the hypercompetitive global economy," says Michael Sheahan, associate director of the Krannert School's Executive Education Programs. "This is a quality program presented by Management Solutions International, a Cedarburg, Wis.-based company run by two Purdue engineering and Krannert School graduates."

Thomas F. Ribar is president of Management Solutions International, and Mark W. Boettcher is a principal in the company. Both have years of experience in industry and have engaged in extensive manufacturing consulting and training. They both teach manufacturing planning and enterprise management in university executive education programs and professional societies, including the American Production and Inventory Control Society (APICS), the Association for Manufacturing Excellence and the Institute for Supply Management.

"Sales and operations planning is the key business communication process that translates the strategic plan into the weekly and daily schedules that drive the rest of the organization," Ribar says. "S&OP, as it is called, is the industrial-strength glue that holds the team together, keeping management focused and working on consistent and integrated plans to keep the business on track."

Boettcher helps companies maximize their investment in enterprise resource planning (ERP) and manufacturing resource planning (MRP) systems.

"In today's manufacturing companies, you're likely to find an ERP or MRP system connecting the plant with its customers and suppliers," Boettcher says. "Companies typically struggle through the implementation of these systems, and executives are frequently frustrated with the lack of return on their investment.

"It is often improved business processes, such as sales and operations planning, that help drive improved operations and ROI (return on investment) for these systems."

The November workshop is the second time the Sales & Operations Planning and Master Scheduling Workshop has been offered on campus.

Patty Deegan, supply/demand manager for Great Lakes Chemical Corp., attended the first workshop July 30 through Aug. 1.

"The workshop gave me great benchmarking tools and so many different ways to evaluate and ask questions," Deegan says. "It makes my job more valuable to both sales and manufacturing.

"Also, in the current business climate, working capital is scarce, and we learned new ways to scale down our optional inventories."

There were 22 participants from five states at the first workshop. Just over half of the participants were from Indiana companies.

The Krannert School's Dauch Center for the Management of Manufacturing Enterprises also is a sponsor of the workshops.

The November workshop costs $1,267 per person or $3,577 for three-person company teams if participants register by Aug. 23. After the early-registration deadline, fees are $1,497 for individuals or $4,047 for three-person teams.

Fees include tuition, materials, continental breakfasts, lunches, refreshments and evening hospitality suites. Lodging is available on the Purdue campus.
