For additional information, call (765) 494-8396 Now Through August 18: Indiana State FairThe 146th annual Indiana State Fair offers something for all ages. Some of the events for this year include daily 4-H and livestock exhibits, various musical artists, educational interactive areas for children, old-time farming demonstrations in the Pioneer Village, blue ribbon horse pulls and the Indiana State Fair Queen Pageant. Purdue Extension exhibits will be located in the Our Land Pavilion. Activities include helpful "Garden Tips" through Extension's new online e-magazine, exotic animal species not native to Indiana, and what agro-terrorism is and how it can affect your family. Tickets for the fair are $6 and children 5 and under get in free. Entertainment tickets can be purchased through Ticketmaster. For more information, contact Ticketmaster at (317) 927-1482. No exchanges or refunds, rain or shine. Gates to the fair open at 6 a.m., and parking is free when available. Additional $3 parking can be found on the old IUPUI property across from the 38th Street Main Gate. Free parking also is available at the Indiana School for the Deaf on 42nd Street. August 14: Purdue Day At Indiana State FairThe Indiana State Fairgrounds will be alive with Boilermaker spirit during Purdue Day. Tents housing exhibits from a majority of the university's schools will line much of Main Street. Other activities will include a meet and greet with astronaut and Purdue alumnus Jerry Ross. Cricket spitting qualifications and spit-off also will be held. An evening parade around the fairgrounds will feature the two Boilermaker Specials, Purdue police car, chemistry van and fire truck. August 22, 26: Farm Bill SeminarsThe Indiana Farm Bureau and Purdue Extension are sponsoring a series of informational seminars on the new farm bill. The meetings will be held across northern Indiana and are open to the public. The meetings will be hands-on sessions led by Purdue ag economist Allan Gray. He will use a spreadsheet program that allows farmers to calculate their government payments. Counties hosting the meetings will be Allen, Whitley, Elkhart, Marshall, St. Joseph and Porter/LaPorte. August 27: Davis-Purdue Ag Center Field DayThe program will start at 8:30 a.m. and will be at the Davis-Purdue Ag Center, five miles north of Farmland, Ind., on State Road 1. Topics include corn and soybean herbicide demonstration plots, fall applied herbicide products, soybean aphids and other insects, global positioning tools on the farm, and pesticide recordkeeping for private applicators. September 14: Hancock County Farm FestivalSpend the day on the farm with the family at the Hancock Farm Festival from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. The six sites on this year's tour are the Apple Family Farm, Brandywine Stables, Kingen's Round Barn, Phares Farm, Sunnyside Greenhouses and Tuttle Orchards. Features and activities include organic milk and cheese production, thoroughbred horse breeding, historical farms, modern grain farms, a commercial greenhouse operation and a commercial fruit farm operation.
