June 19, 2002 Hoosier turkey growers vote to continue check-off program WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – Indiana turkey growers have voted to continue their check-off program for another three years, according to the office of Agricultural Research Programs at Purdue University. Indiana turkey growers first petitioned for the referendum in 1976. Since then, the program has been led by the Turkey Market Development Council, which is made up of elected turkey growers and industry representatives. The council supports research on turkeys, consumer education on the merits of turkey meat, publicity and promotion of turkey products. The council's work is financed by a check-off which amounts to $.0003 per pound live weight. As a result of the recent referendum, 2002 council members are Van Harper, Perdue Farms Inc.; Dave Hermes, Perdue Farms Inc.; Mike Jones, Perdue Farms Inc.; Nick Matheis, Farbest Farms Inc.; Kent Peter, Farbest Farms Inc.; Tom Schaffer, Perdue Farms Inc.; and Nelson Wagler, a grower from Montgomery.
