WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – Diana Prieto has been named director of the Purdue University Affirmation Action Office where she has been serving as interim director since September 2001.

"Diana has provided the office with sound and enthusiastic guidance since she has taken the leadership role," said Alysa Rollock, vice president for human relations, who appointed Prieto. "I am sure that we will continue to achieve the mission and goals of the Affirmative Action Office with her leadership."

Prieto was named interim director when former director Charlotte Westerhaus resigned last May.

"I am thrilled at the opportunity to lead the Affirmative Action Office at an exciting time during Purdue's history," Prieto said. "It is a time of change, and I look forward to contributing through the Affirmative Action Office to the achievement of preeminence at Purdue University."

Originally hired in December 1996, Prieto served as the office's assistant director for conflict resolution, handling concerns and complaints of harassment and discrimination.

Prieto also is a licensed attorney and a registered mediator with the Indiana Commission of Approved Court Mediators. She has received mediation training from the Indiana Continuing Legal Education Forum and the American Arbitration Association.

She received her law degree at Tulane University, New Orleans, after earning her bachelor's at Smith College, Northampton, Mass.

The mission of the Affirmative Action Office is to provide leadership in promoting and fostering an inclusive environment at Purdue for faculty, staff and students; to develop and direct the West Lafayette campus' affirmative action program; and to serve as a resource and coordinator of systemwide affirmative action activities.

The Affirmative Action Office works with the campus community in implementing policies and practices that are consistent with the university's affirmative action program and with federal and state laws on equal employment and educational opportunity. Those policies and laws apply to all persons, without regard to race, religion, sex, color, age, national origin, ancestry, disability, veteran status, sexual orientation, marital status or parental status.
