May 7, 2002 Consumer and Family Sciences names 2002 distinguished alumniWEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – Purdue University's School of Consumer and Family Sciences recently honored six alumni for significant career advancement, long-term leadership within their chosen fields and their professional accomplishments. The 2002 Distinguished Alumni Award winners are:
• Doug Bennett of Indianapolis. The vice president of sales for the Indianapolis Convention and Visitors Association, Bennett earned a bachelor's degree in hotel and tourism management in 1983. He is active in the Professional Convention Managers Association and he also is a member of the American Society of Association Executives, and a member of the Exhibitor Advisory Board. Bennett also volunteers on the board of the IUPUI Jaguars Athletic Club and is active in the Ben Davis Little League organization.
• Marvis Boscher of Lafayette, Ind. Boscher is the director of university residences at Purdue and graduated in 1979 with a bachelor's degree in consumer and family sciences. She has spent her entire professional career working for her alma mater after serving as a residence hall counselor as a student. She managed the former Terry Courts and Windsor Halls, and served as director of residential life for six years before being promoted to her current position in 1998. Boscher is active in the Tri-Kappa Alumni Board and Purdue Convocations Advisory Board.
• Judith Forney of Denton, Texas, dean of the School of Merchandising and Hospitality Management at the University of North Texas. Forney earned both a bachelor of science (home economics, 1971) and doctorate (consumer sciences and retailing in 1980) from Purdue. Her initial appointment at North Texas was as a professor of merchandising in 1992. She was named head of the division of merchandising in 1995 and interim dean of the school in 1998 before being elevated to her current position last year. She is active in several national organizations, including serving on the editorial board and as a reviewer for the American Association of Family and Consumer Sciences.
• Karen Jamesen of West Lafayette, Ind. An assistant professor in Purdue's Department of Foods and Nutrition, Jamesen also earned two degrees from the School of Consumer and Family Sciences – a bachelor's degree in foods and nutrition in 1962, and a master's degree in the same discipline in 1966. She joined the Purdue faculty that year and has won numerous teaching awards over the course of her career. She was inducted into the Teaching Academy in 1997 and has earned the Mary L. Matthews Teaching Award, the Amoco Teaching Award, the Phi Tau Sigma Award, the Gamma Sigma Delta Award of Merit, and has been placed on Purdue's permanent list of Outstanding Teachers in CFS.
• Donna Lero of Ontario, Canada, is the co-director of Centre for Families, Work and Well-being and an associate professor in the Department of Family Relations and Applied Nutrition at the University of Guelph in Ontario, Canada. She earned a master's degree in child development and family studies from Purdue in 1972 and then completed a doctorate in psychology on the West Lafayette campus two years later. She joined the faculty of the University of Guelph in 1974 and has held a variety of positions there. Lero is a founding member of the Center for Families at Purdue and is an invited member of the National Panel of Experts, Canadian Council on Social Development.
• Mary Ellen Posthauer of Evansville, Ind., is the president and chief executive officer of M.E.P. Healthcare Dietary Services Inc. She earned a bachelor's degree in foods and nutrition in 1960. A registered dietitian, she founded the company in 1975 after recognizing a need for dietary consulting services in long-term care facilities. Posthauer has maintained an active role in leading membership of her professional associations and has held positions at the district, state and national levels of the American Dietetic Association. She currently represents the ADA on the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations. In 2000, she received the ADA's Medallion Award, the highest honor awarded in the profession of dietetics. Writer: Sharon A.
