Conference to explore dietary supplements and health

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – Nutrition experts from Purdue University, the University of Tennessee and New York's St. Luke's Hospital will meet on Purdue's West Lafayette campus May 10 to examine the effects of dietary supplements on daily life.

"Millions of people take vitamins and other nutritional supplements every day with very little knowledge about whether or not there is reliable science behind them," said conference chair Marleen Troyer. "This program will address that information gap."

The one-day event, titled "Strategies to Improve Mood, Performance and Health: Do Diet and Supplements Help?" will explore a range of topics in the constantly evolving field of nutrition. The program will include presentations on dietary supplements for athletes and non-athletes, products reported to affect mood and performance, micronutrients and premenstrual syndrome, safety issues surrounding supplement use and the role of regulation in the supplement industry.

The conference will be in Stewart Center, Room 218, beginning at 8:30 a.m. Registration fees are $60 for professionals and $30 for students, and will be accepted the day of the event. Those who wish to register in advance should contact John Wellman, conference coordinator, at (765) 494-0243, jmw@purdue.edu.
