Commencement for seniors in all other agriculture majors will be at 2:30 p.m. Saturday, May 11, in Elliott Hall of Music. There also will be a graduation reception after commencement on May 11 in the Stewart Center's west entrance lobby, located under the mural. May 14: Agricultural Dean's Team Award CeremonyThe 2002 recipient of the Agricultural Dean's Team Award is the Purdue Cooperative Extension Service Land Use Team. The land use team will be honored 2-4 p.m. May 14 in Whistler Hall of Agricultural Research, Room 116, on the Purdue campus in West Lafayette, Ind. The team also will give a presentation about their programs and receive $10,000 to continue outreach efforts. The 22-member land use team was the first-ever collaboration of county educators and campus specialists devoted to working on a public issue, such as land use. May 14: "Making Soil" WorkshopPurdue Extension Forestry and Natural Resources and the Indiana Arborist Association are hosting a workshop on how to convert organic material into fertile soil. This workshop will be at the W.H. Daniel Turfgrass Center in West Lafayette, Ind. and will cover composting methods, raw materials and recipe making, process controls, site development and environmental management. Participants will visit Purdue's SoilerMaker composting operation and have the opportunity to ask questions of compost researchers in the Purdue forestry and natural resources department. Registration begins at 9 a.m.; the workshop runs until 4 p.m. Fees are $75 for IAA members and $110 for non-members. The registration deadline is Tuesday, May 7. May 23-24: Specialty Forest Product Production And MarketingThis program is a "train-the-trainer" workshop for Extension educators and natural resource professionals. The workshop will provide in-depth, detailed, business and research-based production, processing and market information on a wide range of specialty forest products, including food crops, decorative woody florals and medicinals. The program will be at the Lied Conference Center at Arbor Day Farm in Nebraska City, Neb. Because of USDA-SARE financial support, 70 registered participants can attend this course free of charge (including food during the workshop and one night's lodging). To ensure the spread of this information, all attendees must agree to put on one workshop on specialty forest products in their geographic area by May 1, 2003, and to submit a report on this event.
