April 22, 2002 School of Liberal Arts honors three stand-out alumniWEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – Purdue University's School of Liberal Arts presented distinguished alumni awards on April 19 to a pair of communications executives and an editor for one of the country's leading financial publications. Kathryn Fitchey Bushkin and Priscilla Hill-Ardoin, both of McLean, Va., and Carolyn Phillips of New York City were recognized for outstanding contributions to their professional fields and their communities at an honors banquet in the Purdue Memorial Union.
Bushkin, a senior vice president at AOL Time Warner Inc. and president of AOL Time Warner Foundation in Washington, D.C., received a bachelor's degree in speech pathology and audiology from Purdue in 1971. She guides philanthropic activities at AOL Time Warner Inc. and is one of the chief architects of the company's corporate citizenship policies. In 1999, Bushkin was recognized as the top communications professional in the technology industry and as one of the top women in public relations and communications. She and her husband, Art, founded the Stargazer Foundation, a private foundation dedicated to fostering entrepreneurship.
Hill-Ardoin, senior vice president for the Fortune 100 company SBC Communications Inc., earned a master's degree in organizational communication from Purdue 1974. She is responsible for the management of regulatory matters affecting SBC and its affiliates before the Federal Communications Commission in Washington, D.C. Hill-Ardoin has held numerous management positions since joining Southwestern Bell in 1975. She has served the U.S. House of Representatives' Foreign Affairs Committee International Operations Subcommittee as an advisor on international telecommunications issues. She has participated in an executive exchange program and serves on a number of local and national boards of directors and has been widely recognized for her corporate and community achievements.
Phillips is the assistant managing editor of The Wall Street Journal, where her responsibilities include the paper’s staffing and training. She received her bachelor's degree in mass communication from Purdue in 1978. Phillips' career began as science editor for the Purdue University News Service in 1979. In 1982, she joined The Wall Street Journal’s Chicago bureau as a reporter. Since then, she has served as a deputy news editor in Chicago; a recruiter in New York, where her assignment was to increase the number of minorities at The Wall Street Journal and other Dow Jones & Co. newsrooms; and as a bureau chief in Houston. Last fall, Phillips returned to Purdue as an Old Master, a distinction awarded to top professionals in various fields, who visit campus to share their professional experiences with students.
