Purdue residence hall sponsors elementary school

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – Members of the Harrison Cavalier Club, an organization composed of Purdue University students who reside in Harrison Hall, enjoy a special relationship with students at James Cole Elementary School in southern Tippecanoe County.

The club has "adopted" the school, for which it holds special events and assists with everyday activities. One such event is a school carnival at 5:30 p.m. Friday (4/12). The carnival will feature a cakewalk, face painting, a moon walk, games and prizes. Each class also will assemble a basket of goodies for a silent auction.

Barb Frazee, Harrison Hall general manager, says hall residents have fun interacting with the younger students.

"It gives the college students a chance to give back to the community and reminds them that the population of Tippecanoe County is not just 18- to 22-year-olds."

The Cavalier Club also is assembling take-home packets for parents of second-graders to help them prepare their children for the ISTEP test next fall. The packets will be assembled on Tuesday, April 23. A parent meeting on the ISTEP test will be at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, May 1. Cavalier Club members will provide childcare at the meeting.

"We are reaching out to the community in a unique way to help a county school with a learning project," Frazee says. "Purdue students can truly make a difference."
