Purdue student receives prestigious state award

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – A Purdue University senior in education was honored recently with a 2002 Outstanding Future Reading Teacher Award by the Indiana Reading Professors Council.

Gwen Bauman of Geneva, Ind., was one of 12 Indiana future educators recognized for demonstrated excellence in the teaching of reading.

Heather Harder, awards committee co-chair, said Bauman should have a successful career as a reading teacher.

"Reading professors from across the state were asked to identify one student from their university that exhibits the skills and attributes needed to be an exemplary future teacher of reading," Harder said. "Nominees were required to have completed a minimum of 12 hours of reading and language arts classes and have a stellar GPA. This year's recipients meet and exceed these requirements."

Bauman was presented with her award at an Indiana State Reading Conference banquet in March at the Hyatt Regency Hotel in Indianapolis.
