Conference addresses hardwood lumber grading, manufacturing

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – A three-day conference will be May 7-9 in Goshen, Ind., to help lumbermen gain a thorough knowledge of the hardwood lumber grades.

The conference is designed to provide registrants with a detailed introduction to the National Hardwood Lumber Association's grading rules as well as hands-on experience in grading various species of hardwood lumber. Additional information on lumber manufacturing practices will be provided.

From the lumber manufacturing perspective, sawmill owners, managers, sawyers, edgermen, graders and sales staff will benefit from the workshop. Also, purchasing agents and others involved in processing rough lumber into parts and calculating yields will find the program useful.

"It is important for anyone involved with hardwood lumber to understand the process and thereby develop a keener sense of value and yield," says Daniel Cassens, wood products specialist at Purdue.

The instructor for the course is Tim Kassis, a former NHLA district chief and lumber salesman. Kassis will relate the technical aspects of the NHLA rules, as well practical applications depending on end use.

The program registration fee is $200 and covers the cost of the NHLA rules book, other materials, refreshments and lunch. Registration begins at 7:45 a.m. in the Goshen Fairgrounds Arena Building.

This program is sponsored by the Purdue University wood research laboratory, Indiana Department of Natural Resources' Division of Forestry and Lake States Lumber Association Education Inc.
