March 27, 2002 Deadline extended for summer educational travel programs WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – Spaces are still available for six summer courses through Purdue University Educational Travel Programs. The deadline to sign up for four of the programs has been extended to Monday (4/1). Courses and dates include: • "European Grand Tour: Cross Cultural Studies" (May 15-29). Travelers will explore the cultures and some of the most famous sites of Germany, Italy, France, Switzerland and England with communication Professor Ralph Webb. • "Heart of the Mediterranean World: Southern Italy, Sicily and Malta" (May 16-June 2). History professors Gordon Young and Marta Van Landingham will lead travelers through the history, geography and art of Pompeii, Capri, the Gozo Islands and Vatican City. Three credits in history are available. • "New York: Theatre and Art" (June 12-16). This course offers orchestra-level seating for Broadway performances along with art events, tours and special talks not available to the general public. Course instructors are Don Seybold, Purdue Convocations associate director, and Barbara Mayoras, Purdue Convocations audience development director. • "Pharmacy on the Danube" ( June 22-30). Issues related to medication safety will be explored as travelers cruise the Danube. The key lecturer is pharmacy Professor Steven Abel. Six continuing education credits in pharmacy are available. The deadline for two other courses has been extended to May 3. Courses and dates include: • "Central Alps: Exploring Geology in Switzerland and Italy" (July 8-25).Travelers will explore a cave filled with quartz crystals, drive through undeveloped Alpine landscapes, walk across the geological boundary between Europe and Africa and visit a high-tech underground research laboratory with Swiss native Reto Gieré, a professor of geochemistry. Three geology credits are available. • "Aspen Music Festival" (July 31-Aug. 5). Music lovers from around the world will converge upon Colorado for this popular festival, which features a variety of music, including symphony, chamber, opera, choral and family concerts. Course instructors are Todd Wetzel, director of Purdue Convocations, and Mayoras. The courses range in cost from $2,195 to $3,995. Fees include airfare, ground transportation, lodging, entrance fees to museums and exhibits, some meals, health insurance, and tuition fees, if applicable. A $200 deposit is required with reservations, which are accepted on a first-come basis.
