McDonald's restaurants to help celebrate Ag Week

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – Purdue University students in the School of Agriculture will greet and talk with patrons of a local McDonald's restaurant on Tuesday (3/19) as part of National Agriculture Week, which is March 17-23.

In addition to the McDonald's in Lafayette, special events also will be held that week at one McDonald's restaurant in each of the following Indiana cities: Avon, Columbus, Logansport and Muncie. For more information on those events contact Dee Dee Sigler at the Indiana Office of the Commissioner of Agriculture, (317) 233-2207.

The Purdue students will be at the McDonald's, located at 510 Sagamore Parkway in Lafayette, from 7-9 a.m. The students will assist restaurant patrons and provide information about agriculture and related careers.

"People sometimes forget where their food comes from," said Dana Neary, events coordinator in the School of Agriculture. "By teaming up with McDonald's, we hope to raise awareness about the importance of agriculture."

Victor Lechtenberg, dean of the School of Agriculture, also will be at the restaurant from 8-9 a.m. During that time, Lafayette city councilman Steve Klink, representing Lafayette Mayor Dave Heath, will make a proclamation recognizing Agriculture Week. Poster displays also will provide information on agriculture. Patrons who answer special trivia questions will receive small giveaway items.

The Indiana Agriculture Resource Council is contributing 450,000 tray liners that will be used at 150 McDonald's restaurants across central Indiana during the week. The tray liners will feature information about agriculture in a question-and-answer format. The IARC is a partnership of 23 commodity/farm organizations and state and federal agencies.

All Tippecanoe County fourth-grade students also will learn more about agriculture next week during Ag Day activities on Wednesday and Thursday (3/20-21) at the Tippecanoe County fairgrounds.
