March 8, 2002 Listeners invited to help WBAA celebrate its new facilityWEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – To celebrate its newly renovated, $2 million facility, WBAA invites listeners to an open house at its Elliott Hall of Music studios from 4-7 p.m. Monday, March 18.
Tours, memorabilia viewing, music and refreshments will be provided. Dan Skinner, WBAA station manager, says he hopes the radio station's listeners will take advantage of the opportunity to see the station's state-of-the art technology, the expanded space and meet with some of the station's on-air personalities. "Clearly, WBAA's new facilities illustrate Purdue's commitment to excellence in public broadcasting," Skinner says. "The station is a physical representation of Purdue's services to the state of Indiana and beyond." He says listeners who attend the open house will be able to see the station's mission in action. Part of that mission is to enable more students to work at the station and to expand news coverage on campus, local community and regional events. "The expanded studios and upgraded equipment increase our ability to produce local programming and provide in-depth news and issue reporting to the Greater Lafayette community and around the world," Skinner says. "WBAA's student staff is vital to these efforts, so who better than our students and alumni to talk about what the station has meant to them?" Michael Warden, chief architect of the new studios, says he is pleased with the project's outcome. "The studio and engineering areas use interesting aesthetics, such as glass, to make it a welcoming space for visitors, not to mention the possibilities for more open communication between the staff," Warden says. "Anyone who visited the old studio will simply be amazed." WBAA began broadcasting in 1922. Prior to the renovation, its facility dated back to 1941, when the studio was moved to the Elliott Hall of Music from the old electrical engineering building. WBAA-AM and FM air National Public Radio news programming such as "Morning Edition" and "All Things Considered." AM 920 also airs in-depth talk programming, jazz and other music, while FM 101.3 offers classical music. Those who wish to attend the public open house are asked to RSVP by calling (765) 494-5920.
