Seminar to address aquaculture in IndianaWEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – A seminar on research, regulations and marketing opportunities in aquaculture is being sponsored by Purdue University Cooperative Extension Service in Marion County, the Indiana Aquaculture Association and the Illinois-Indiana Sea Grant College program.The event will be 8:30 a.m. to 4:15 p.m. March 23 at the Purdue Cooperative Extension Service office of Marion County in Indianapolis. This seminar is designed to explore many aspects of the aquaculture industry. Professional aquaculturists will answer questions on how to begin a career in production aquaculture and how to improve your operation if you are currently a producer. Seminar sessions include an overview on what fish species can be raised in Indiana, how to finance an aquaculture venture, regulations in Indiana on fish processing and distribution, fish nutrition, fish marketing and sales, and a demonstration on fish processing. Brian Miller, Purdue Extension wildlife specialist, says the seminar offers producers a chance to get expert advice without having to invest a lot of time or money. "If someone is thinking of expanding their existing farm operation to include aquaculture, this seminar will help them get many answers they need and make contact with professionals who can help them make the right decisions to be successful," Miller said. The $45 seminar registration fee also includes a one-year membership to the Indiana Aquaculture Association. Registration is due by March 18. A boxed lunch can be purchased for $8 at the seminar, or participants may bring their own lunch.
