February 13, 2002 Distance-education workshop offered for community plannersWEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – Issues in land-use decision making and local community planning will be covered in a series of three workshops to be offered across the state. The Community Planner Certification Program will be offered in sessions on March 5, 12 and 19. The program is targeted to local officials involved in any facet of land-use decision making. Participants may attend the sessions at seven sites across Indiana. Sessions will be held via two-way videoconferencing at Purdue University Extension offices in Columbia City, Evansville, Frankfort, Greensburg, Noblesville and Plymouth. Sessions also will take place on the campus of Indiana University-South in New Albany. "Land-use decisions play an important role in local community development, but there is limited training available for local plan commissioners to equip them for making those decisions," said Rick Chase, Extension director and event organizer. "This workshop will cover some of the legal consequences of planning, ways to organize people to work together to solve local problems and options to help communities balance growth with protecting agriculture land," Chase said. Other topics to be covered include citizen participation, research on community planning, zoning issues, state influences on local planning and land use and the environment. Each session will last from 3-8 p.m. The registration fee is $125, which includes the cost of a notebook and three evening meals. The group discount rate is $110 if there are five or more attendees from the same organization. The registration and payment deadline is Feb. 25. Registrations should be made by contacting the Purdue Extension office in Whitley County at 888 EXT-INFO, by e-mail to Janet.Hindbaugh@ces.purdue.edu or by fax at (260) 244-6751. Each request should include the name, address, phone, fax, e-mail, title and desired viewing site for each attendee. The program is sponsored by Purdue Extension, Ball State University, Indiana Farm Bureau Inc. and the Indiana Land Resources Council. Several instructors from the sponsoring agencies will participate on site and via video.
