Nominations sought for family service award

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – Purdue University's School of Consumer and Family Sciences is seeking nominations for the first annual Inspiring Families and Building Communities Award. The award will recognize exemplary service to Indiana families.

"This award came about as a way to recognize service to families at the grassroots level," said Dennis Savaiano, dean of the School of Consumer and Family Sciences. "We wanted to offer an award that would be community-based."

Individuals, organizations, programs or collaborations that have demonstrated service to Indiana families and have the endorsement of their community foundation can apply or be nominated. Youth organizations serving both caregivers and children will be considered.

Self-nominations will be accepted if endorsed by their community foundation. There is no limit on the number of nominations a community foundation can endorse.

Nominations should include documentation of work done by the nominee which demonstrates the need for, and impact of, the nominees' efforts. Nominations will be reviewed by a panel of family service professionals.

A $1,500 cash award will be given to the family organization the winner designates within their community. The community foundation endorsing the winning nominee also will receive $1,500. Purdue faculty will present the award during a ceremony in the recipients' community.

"We are pleased to do this," Savaiano said. "Many organizations are helping families succeed in this economy and environment. It's important that we recognize and support them."

The nomination deadline is 5 p.m. March 1. Nomination forms and additional information are available by calling Betty Krejci, award coordinator, at (765) 494-8252.

The award winner will be announced in late spring or early summer.
