February 27: Parp/Strip-Till Programs

The Purdue Cooperative Extension Service, in conjunction with the Miami County Soil and Water Conservation District, is holding a zone-tillage seminar and private applicator recertification program (PARP). The event will be at the Miami County 4-H Fairgrounds, north of Peru, Ind. Registration begins at 8 a.m. and the first session will begin at 8:30 a.m. The event will end with a lunch provided by Monsanto. The focus will be on strip-till or zone-till, the fastest growing new tillage system in Indiana. Participants will learn where strip-till works best compared to other tillage systems for corn. Training on how to avoid pesticide drift also will be available, and will count as one of the three programs required to maintain private applicators certification. A $10 fee is required to attend this session. March 4-8: Asta Management Academy

Purdue University's Center for Food and Agricultural Business Management will host the 15th annual American Seed Trade Association Management Academy. This program is geared toward seed industry professionals who want to review and expand their knowledge of important management tools and concepts. The four-day academy will be at the Krannert Executive Education Center in West Lafayette, Ind. The academy is open to members only, and the cost for the program is $2,195 per person. The fee includes 34 hours of instruction, materials, course references, continental breakfasts, daily luncheons, social hours, a reception and banquet.

March 21: Midwest Women In Agriculture Conference

The first-ever Midwest Women in Agriculture Conference, sponsored by the Purdue Cooperative Extension Service, will be at Swan Lake Resort in Plymouth, Ind. The event will focus on the needs of women in agriculture, both on and off the farm, and in the agribusiness industry. Keynote speaker for the event is Jolene Brown, a public speaker and farm spouse and mother. She will speak on the topic "The Top Ten Stupid Things Families do to Break Up Their Farm Operation." Other sessions will cover marketing your farm product, land use and neighbor relations, and making small farms profitable. The conference lasts from 8 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. EST. March 23: 4-H Junior Pork Day

Purdue University is hosting the annual Junior Pork Day in West Lafayette, Ind. The event will be in Lilly Hall and registration is from 7:30-9 a.m. This program focuses mainly on developing the swine handling skills of first-year 4-H members and parents. There will be training sessions on proper swine feeding, nutrition, vaccinations and showmanship. The day includes a lunch provided by corporate sponsors and mini-judging competitions for the junior members, senior members and adults. There also will be an awards ceremony at the conclusion of the program for winners of the judging contests. The first session will begin at 9:30 a.m., and the day will end at approximately 3:15 p.m. A $3 registration fee will be collected at the door.
