Indiana and Illinois schools honored at Purdue Jazz Festival

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – The 12th annual Purdue Jazz Festival, held Jan. 18-20, featured three days filled with concerts, clinics, competitions and special activities, which concluded with five bands winning the festival's highest awards.

Combos from John Hersey High School and Edgewood Junior High School in Illinois, along with Big Bands from Pike High School, Terre Haute North High School and Prospect High School in Indiana were named Honor Bands for the 2002 festival.

Other distinctions, including outstanding performance and judges awards, recognized significant performances in the competitive event. Twelve students also were recognized as outstanding soloists. Approximately 2,000 student musicians representing 100 ensembles from 43 high schools and middle schools from three states participated in the competition.

The 2003 festival will be Jan. 17-19. An announcement of the jazz headliners for the Friday and Saturday night concerts is expected in April. For more information on the event contact Mo Trout, Purdue Jazz Festival director, (765) 494-9110, mttrout@purdue.edu.
