February 1, 2002 PMO to perform in benefit to raise scholarship fundsWEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – Purdue Musical Organizations is teaming up with the Lafayette Rotary Club to raise money for college scholarships for local students. PMO will stage a benefit performance called "Singing for Greater Lafayette," Saturday, Feb. 9, at Cumberland Place in West Lafayette. The performance features all PMO groups, along with the children's choir and Greater Lafayette high school choirs. Dinner will be served at 6 p.m. followed by the 8 p.m. performance. Brian Breed, PMO director, says he is thrilled that the money raised will assist local youth in furthering their education. "It's an ever-increasing challenge to raise money for college," Breed says. "We're pleased to be using our talents and gifts for something more than a show." Breed says it is important that PMO contribute to a worthy cause each year. "PMO hosted its first benefit performance two years ago to raise money for the renovation of the Long Center," Breed says. "Last year, more than $40,000 was raised for Habitat for Humanity." Dave Bough, Rotary Club president-elect and event chairman, says his organization has enjoyed working with PMO. "Our club has had scholarships since 1945," Bough says. "Since we've had such a good relationship with the Varsity Glee Club, we decided this was a good way to raise additional money." Bough says his club to date has awarded 667 scholarships to high school seniors in Tippecanoe county. Two scholarships, based on academic performance and citizenship, are awarded each year to students from Lafayette Jefferson High School, Central Catholic High School, Harrison High School, McCutcheon High School and West Lafayette High School. Tickets for "Singing for Greater Lafayette" are available at Arni's in Market Square, all Purdue Employees Federal Credit Union branches or through the box office by calling (765) 494-3933. Tickets for the dinner and performance are $75, of which $40 is a tax-deductible contribution to the Lafayette Rotary Foundation. Theatre seats for the performance alone are $15 and $20.
