January 28, 2002 Juvenile violence awareness focus at Keeping Kids Safe workshopWEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – A three-day workshop for community leaders and professionals who work with youth will emphasize awareness and prevention of juvenile violence. The Keeping Kids Safe workshop is slated for Feb. 26-28 at the Brown County Inn in Nashville, Ind, and is co-sponsored by Purdue University Cooperative Extension Service Community Systemwide Response Initiative, Indiana Criminal Justice Institute and Communities Against Rape Initiative. Pam Robbins, coordinator of the Community Systemwide Response Initiative, said the workshop is an opportunity for youth professionals to learn from nationally known authorities without traveling out of state. One of the keynote speakers is James Garbarinoco, director of the Family Life Development Center and the Elizabeth Lee Vincent Professor of Human Development at Cornell University. His presentation is titled "Living with Violence Every Day." Participants may attend all three days of the conference or choose individual one-day sessions. Session topics and times are: • Tuesday, Feb. 26, (9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.) – "School Safety in Indiana" and "The Changing Scene of Gangs in Indiana." • Wednesday, Feb. 27, (7 a.m. to 4 p.m.) "Children and Terrorism," "Violence and the Media" and "Living with Violence Every Day." • Thursday, Feb. 28, (7 a.m. to 4 p.m.) "Gender-Specific Focus on Girls in the Juvenile Justice System" and "Addressing the Developmental Needs of Girls in the Juvenile Justice System." "The sessions address issues that may seem out of touch for Indiana," Robbins said. "However, the first workshop we ever sponsored was on school safety. A month before the workshop, the shooting in Jonesboro, Ark., happened. We have found communities have the ability to recognize their needs and get information before violence happens." The cost of the three-day conference is $120 or $50 for a single-day session. The fee includes registration, materials, continental breakfasts and lunches. The room rate is $50 per night for a single or double, and reservations should be made by Friday (2/1). A block of rooms is reserved for "Purdue CSR."
