January 25, 2002 Black Voices of Inspiration to perform with Harlem Gospel Choir WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – The Purdue University Black Voices of Inspiration Choir will provide the opening act for the Harlem Gospel Choir, which will perform at 2 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 3, at the Long Center for the Performing Arts in downtown Lafayette. Founded at the famous Cotton Club in Harlem, the Harlem Gospel Choir consists of singers and musicians from several black churches in Harlem. Widely recognized, they have performed for the Pope, Nelson Mandela and at the 1998 Maltic Music Awards. The choir also works with children's charities around the world. Renee Thomas, Black Cultural Center director, says the choir's performance promises to be uplifting. "The Harlem Gospel Choir has become one of the preeminent and most successful choirs in the world," Thomas says. "The choir's joyful hand clapping and foot stomping resonates a feeling and experience that lives long after the performance."
