Purdue Theatre designs honored at regional competition

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – For the second consecutive year, a Purdue Theatre design won top honors at the Region III Kennedy Center/American College Theatre Festival.

Christopher R. Dunham, a master's student from Whitewater, Wis., won the Barbizon Award for Design Excellence in scenic design for his work on Purdue Theatre’s production of "Sueño." Dunham will compete in April at the national level in Washington, D.C.

"I am very happy for Chris," said Russ Jones, theatre department chair. "He created an absolutely stunning design for "Sueño" and will represent us admirably at the Kennedy Center."

Last year "Candida" lighting designer Susan Nicholson of Danville, Ind., won the Barbizon Award for Design Excellence. She was runner-up in the national competition.

"Sueño," by Jose Rivera, was selected for the festival showcase, performed in Evansville, Ind., on Jan. 10. This marks the third consecutive year that Purdue theatre has taken a production to the regional festival.

Other regional award winners include graduate student Kristy Hansen of Lovell, Wyo., who won the Project 2002 competition for non-produced costume design. Graduate student Joel Zuidhof of Duncan, British Columbia, received a certificate of merit. Zuidhof composed and designed sound elements for "Sueño."
