January 17, 2002 WBAA to focus on non-violent protest in next town forum WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – Non-violent protest will be the focus of discussion when WBAA airs its fifth installment of "An American Town Forum" at 7 p.m. Tuesday (1/22). The show, entitled "Exercising Our Rights: Non-Violent Protest," will be broadcast live from the Trails banquet facility at 325 Burnett Road, West Lafayette. A panel of experts on non-violent protest will address questions from a live audience. Panelists include Lafayette Peace Coalition coordinators Berenice Carroll and Dor Ben-Amotz, along with Leonard Harris, a Purdue professor of American studies. They will talk about the history of non-violent protest, the need for it and its effectiveness. Different styles of non-violent protest also will be discussed. David Bunte, WBAA program director, says this installment of "An American Town Forum" was organized to provide a voice for people opposed to military operations in Afghanistan or other governmental policies. "There is a long history in this country of non-violent protest," Bunte says. "From civil rights to the Vietnam protests to current peace movements, there have been a number of arenas in which people would like the government to function differently."
