Violinist to feature Bartok, Mozart and Brahms in recital

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – Award-winning violinist Joseph Lin will perform at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 24, in Eliza Fowler Hall in Purdue's Stewart Center.

Admission is $9, and tickets can be purchased at Purdue box offices or charged by phone at (765) 494-3933 or (800) 914-SHOW.

The recital will feature works by some of the world's greatest composers. Bartok's "First Rhapsody for violin and piano," Mozart's "Sonata for piano and violin in E minor" and Brahms' "Sonata No. 1 in G major, Op. 78 for violin and piano" will be among the works Lin plans to perform in the intimate Fowler Hall. Pieces by Tchaikovsky and Schoenfield also will be performed.

The 23-year-old Lin has already earned broad recognition for his artistry. Described as "master of the violin" by the Boston Globe, Lin was awarded first prize at the Concert Artists Guild Competition in 1996 and was named a Presidential Scholar in the Arts the same year.

In 1999, he became the youngest musician ever to receive the Pro Musicis International Award. Most recently, he received first prize at the Michael Hill World Violin Competition in New Zealand.

Lin was 4 when he began studying the violin. He graduated from the Julliard School Pre-College Division in 1996 and continued his violin studies while attending Harvard. Lin graduated magna cum laude from Harvard in June 2000.

During his Purdue performance, Lin will be accompanied by pianist and conductor Benjamin Loeb.

Lin is being presented as part of Purdue Convocations' Discovery Concerts series. The series is designed to showcase up and coming performers of classical music.
