JAN. 11, 14: AREA BEEF MEETINGS

The 2009-2010 area beef meetings, hosted by the Indiana Beef Cattle Association (IBCA) and Purdue University, will take place in Indiana's 10 Extension areas through January. Topics for this year's meetings include calving, vaccinating for scours and the Sandhill Calving System. Remaining meeting dates and locations include:

JAN. 12-14: FORT WAYNE FARM SHOW

Purdue University Extension specialists will speak on a variety of agricultural issues at the 2010 Fort Wayne Farm Show, which takes place Jan. 12-14 at the Allen County War Memorial Coliseum, 4000 Parnell Ave. Purdue Extension programs also will be highlighted at a display in the exhibit area. Educational sessions take place in Appleseed Room A10 each day. Purdue speakers include agricultural economists Otto Doering, Corinne Alexander and Chris Hurt; Chad Martin, renewable energy specialist; Curt Emanuel, educator, Purdue Extension, Clinton County; and Bill Horan, educator, Purdue Extension, Wells County. Other speakers represent agricultural organizations, agribusinesses and government. Session topics include grain and livestock marketing, climate, wind farming, future challenges for agriculture, niche markets, and pond management. The exhibit area features agricultural equipment, products and services. Farm show hours are 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Jan. 12, 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Jan. 13 and 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Jan. 14. JAN. 19-21: INDIANA HORTICULTURAL CONGRESS

This annual conference for fruit and vegetable producers will address a broad range of production-related issues, including a daylong workshop on food safety. It takes place at the Wyndham Hotel in Indianapolis. Purdue University Extension and the university's Department of Horticulture and Landscape Architecture are among event sponsors. A full-day session will cover good agricultural practices and good handling practices for fresh fruit and vegetable growers, U.S. Department of Agriculture third-party food safety audits and similar issues. Other daylong sessions are planned on agritourism and high tunnel production. In addition to agritourism, the Congress program includes concurrent sessions on vegetables, tree fruits, grapes, farm marketing and processing tomatoes. Presentations on melons and pumpkins, bees and pollination of cucurbits, pest management, wholesale markets, and nutrient management also are planned. More than 60 sessions and workshops are scheduled. Speakers include Purdue Extension specialists, industry professionals and representatives of the Indiana State Department of Agriculture, USDA and commodity organizations. An accompanying trade show features more than 50 exhibitors. Registration is $50 for members of sponsoring organizations and $55 for non-members. Additional people from the same farm operation and spouses are $40. Lunches, banquets and accommodations at the Wyndham Hotel are extra. JAN. 20: CENTRAL INDIANA PORK CONFERENCE

Pork producers can learn how to better manage the financial portion of their operation, as well as legislative changes that could affect their industry, during this conference that takes place from 9 a.m. to 3:15 p.m. at Rossville High School. The conference is sponsored by the Clinton County Pork Producers and Purdue Extension Clinton County. Conference presentations include a pork industry outlook by Chris Hurt, Purdue agricultural economist, and "Dealing With Contracts in a Changing Pork Industry" by Ken Perkins, First Farmers Bank of Peru. Other presenters include Brian Richert, Purdue swine specialist, and Dave Murray of Indiana Packers. Representatives from the National Pork Board and Indiana Pork will provide industry-related information, including a legislative update. Conference registration is due Jan. 15. JAN. 25, 26, 27, 28, 29: CROP MANAGEMENT WORKSHOPS

Farmers and commercial applicators can learn about the science and research behind crop management at the 2010 Purdue University Crop Management Workshops. The workshops take place from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at five locations in Indiana. Among the topics addressed by Purdue Extension specialists at each workshop are: water quality and its affect on pesticide performance; new federal containments and container rules and what they mean for commercial applicators; herbicide performance updates and resistance weed issues; challenges with rootworm in Bt corn; seed control measures to implement to protect corn and soybeans from nematode infestation; stressors that affect corn growth and yield; soybean planting techniques, seed fungicide and improvements for the coming year; and the effect of disease in corn and soybeans throughout the state and the results of fungicide applications. JAN. 26, 28; FEB. 4: CHARTING YOUR FARM'S FINANCIAL FUTURE

These daylong workshops, sponsored by Purdue Extension's Women in Agriculture Team, are intended to provide farmers the knowledge and tools to better handle the financial side of their operations. The identical programs take place from 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. EST Jan. 26 at the Education Center of the Tipton County Fairgrounds, Tipton; 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. EST Jan. 28 at the Fulton County Fairgrounds Extension Office, Rochester; and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. CST Feb. 4 at the Community Center of the Orange County Fairgrounds, Paoli. Each workshop will address such topics as balance sheets, income statements, cash flows, financial analysis, performance ratios and managing risk. Speakers include Freddie Barnard, Purdue Extension agricultural finance and farm management specialist; Lynn Lambert, a certified public account with Lambert, Lanoue & Smoker LLC of Monticello; and representatives of Farm Credit Services of Mid-America. Workshop registration is $30 per person and $15 for each additional person from the same operation or family. Registration fees increase $10 per person after the Jan. 19 deadline. FEB. 6: PURDUE AGRICULTURAL ALUMNI FISH FRY

Purdue's two World Food Prize Laureates are featured speakers for the annual fish fry, which takes place at 11:30 a.m. Feb. 6 in the Toyota Blue Ribbon Pavilion at the Indiana State Fairgrounds in Indianapolis. Philip Nelson, Purdue's Scholle Chair Professor in Food Processing and the 2007 World Food Prize winner, and Gebisa Ejeta, Purdue's Distinguished Professor of Agronomy and 2009 winner, will speak on "Assuring Global Food Security." The World Food Prize has been presented annually since 1987 by the World Food Prize Foundation and recognizes significant contributions toward improving the world food supply. Nelson won the award for developing scientific breakthroughs in large-scale storage and transportation of fresh fruit and vegetable products, known as aseptic food processing. Ejeta was honored in 2009 for developing sorghum hybrids resistant to drought and the parasitic Striga weed. The hybrids have dramatically increased sorghum production and availability for hundreds of millions of people in sub-Saharan Africa. Tickets for the Ag Alumni Fish Fry are $20 and must be purchased in advance. Tickets are available by contacting the Purdue Ag Alumni office at 765-494-8593 or by e-mailing agalumni@purdue.edu. The menu features both Indiana farm-raised yellow perch and roasted pork loin entrŽes. Dietary accommodations and substitutions are available by advance reservation. Reserved parking permits are available for lots adjacent to the Toyota Blue Ribbon Pavilion. Round-trip bus transportation is available from campus, with two convenient departure times. Advance purchase for parking and bus tickets is required. Complimentary on-site childcare is provided if arranged in advance. The Ag Forecast, a program highlighting important topics in agriculture, will precede the Fish Fry starting at 9:30 a.m. in the Grand Hall, also located on the fairgrounds.
